Times Table Rock Stars and Year 2 Maths Competitions

It has been a busy term for maths competitions in our schools!

During May, 10 schools took part in our second annual Stour Vale Times Tables Rock Stars competition for KS2. The event was designed to generate excitement around times tables, encourage regular practice and give Year 4 pupils in particular a confidence boost ahead of the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) in June.

The competition was another success, with pupils showing great enthusiasm throughout the month. Congratulations to Holywell, who retained their title and were crowned overall winners for the second consecutive year. Newtown finished in second place, followed by Moat Farm Juniors in third, Northfield Road in fourth and Olive Hill in fifth.

As champions, Holywell received the Times Tables Rock Stars trophy. Certificates were awarded to the top five performing classes across all participating schools in recognition of their outstanding effort.

A huge well done to all pupils and staff who took part. It has been wonderful to hear about the buzz and excitement created around times tables, with children challenging themselves and celebrating their progress.

On Wednesday 1st July, the Training Hub at Ridgewood was buzzing with excitement as we welcomed Year 2 pupils from Brook, Holywell, Moat Farm Infants, Newtown, Olive Hill and Queen Victoria for our inaugural Stour Vale Year 2 Maths Competition. Who would be the first school to win the coveted Year 2 trophy?

Throughout the event, the children worked together in their teams to tackle a range of engaging mathematical challenges, applying their number skills, reasoning, and problem-solving strategies in a fun and supportive environment. It was wonderful to see pupils encouraging one another, thinking creatively, and approaching each challenge with confidence.

A special thank-you goes to our fantastic Year 8 Ridgewood helpers, who played a key role in leading activities and supporting the younger pupils throughout the day. Their enthusiasm, organisation, and encouragement helped make the event such a positive experience for everyone involved. Thanks also need to go to school staff for arranging transport and accompanying the children throughout the morning.

We are delighted with how well the event was received and are already looking forward to running the competition again next year. We also hope to introduce a separate Maths Competition for Year 5 pupils.
